In 2025, the Martin County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) proudly commemorates a century of dedicated service to the citizens of Martin County, Florida. Established in 1925, the same year Martin County was formed from parts of Palm Beach and St. Lucie counties, the MCSO has grown alongside the community it serves, evolving to meet the changing needs of its residents.

Founding and Early Years

The MCSO was founded in 1925 with the appointment of Sheriff Bert H. Babcock, who served until 1926. During these formative years, the Sheriff's Office faced challenges typical of a developing county, including addressing burglaries and maintaining public order. Sheriff Babcock was known for his innovative use of bloodhounds in investigations, a practice that underscores the agency's early commitment to adopting effective law enforcement methods.

Growth and Development

Over the past 100 years, the MCSO has expanded its services and capabilities to better serve Martin County's growing population. From its humble beginnings, the agency has developed specialized units such as the K-9 Unit, Aviation Unit, SWAT Team, and Marine Unit, reflecting a commitment to comprehensive public safety. The MCSO also emphasizes community engagement through programs like the Citizen's Academy and Community Outreach Unit, fostering strong relationships between law enforcement and residents.

Centennial Celebration: A Walk Through Time

To honor its 100th anniversary, the MCSO hosted "A Walk Through Time" on May 28, 2025. This event showcased the agency's rich history through exhibits featuring vintage photographs, historical artifacts, and displays of modern law enforcement technology. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with past and present members of the MCSO, gaining insight into the agency's evolution over the past century. The celebration highlighted the enduring commitment of the MCSO to the safety and well-being of Martin County residents.
