Human Resources Unit
The Martin County Sheriff's Office employs more than 600 members in various positions, both sworn and civilian. The Human Resource Unit is staffed with a manager, assistant manager, three Human Resources technicians, who specialize in benefits, workers' compensation and applicant process. The unit members are cross-trained and work as a team to provide continuous efficient service to the agency regardless of any challenges that may arise, such as illness, hurricanes or budget constraints. The Martin County Sheriff's Office is an equal opportunity employer.
Recruitment
The unit recruits for open and new positions as annual budgets allow. When we have an opening to be filled, we review current applications on file, advertise in the local newspaper, post on our website and utilize other internet methods.
Understanding that human resources represents our community's most important investment, we must recruit and retain individuals who are highly motivated and committed to excellence in our profession. We will enhance the skills of personnel to ensure motivation, creativity, dedication and professionalism, while creating an atmosphere to job satisfaction, enthusiasm, security and personal career development.
Responsibilities
The Human Resource Unit has diverse responsibilities ranging from applicant process that includes administering pre-employment tests, scheduling appointments for interviews, psychological and drug tests. The documents are collected and reviewed for accuracy and authenticity to ensure the information given to the Sheriff for review will assist him in making the best hiring decision possible.
Other duties include workers' compensation, employee benefits and retirement planning. We participate in collective bargaining for sworn and civilian members, and conduct new hire orientations. The unit coordinates agency events such as:

- Health fairs
- Job fairs
- Life-saving awards
- Perfect attendance
- Quarterly employee awards
- Retirement workshops
